Saree is a traditional attire that has evolved through times. A woman’s wardrobe is incomplete without it. Handloom sarees of heirloom quality – katan silk, banarsi, pat silk, dhakai Jamdani and many more need to be taken care with utmost love and affection. These sarees are delicate with intricate patterns , therefore, maintenance is also an important factor to preserve these sarees .
This blog brings few tips in handling these handloom sarees with care, thereby increasing the life of your sarees.
Care of Dhakai Jamdani and banarsi sarees:-
While storing the handloom sarees, keep them in a close where it is dark. Since these sarees are sensitive to light, this will help in retaining the original colors of these priceless sarees for years.
Make sure to take out the sarees in a month or two and unfold and fold them again in another way to avoid stubborn creases.
Jamdani and banarsi sarees require only dry wash. Never try to wash them with water at home.
At regular intervals of time, keep them open in house for few hours. This will help the fabric to breathe and freshen up for their durability.
How to wash, dry and store a handloom cotton saree:-
Soak the saree for 10-15 minutes in a lukewarm water mixed with rock salt. This will hold the colour of the saree and prevent the colour from bleeding.
Rinse it a couple of times in cold water.
Always use mild detergent to wash the saree. Do not wring the saree.
Always starch cotton sarees after washing them to retain their freshness and crispness.
Never machine wash these sarees otherwise they will be damaged as these sarees are very delicate.
Dry in partial shady area . Avoid direct exposure to the sunlight as the UV rays will have an adverse effect on the colour and strength of the fabric.
Wrap them in light cotton muslin cloth for storing. This will give the sarees breathing space and prevent one sari from sticking to another when kept in a pile.
Store the sarees in a proper ventilated and dry area free from humid conditions .
How to remove food stains from cotton handloom sarees:-
It becomes a mood spoiling moment when some food stains your favorite jamdani or garad sarees during a ceremony or any other function. Here some tips to deal with such stains:
A thick coat of white toothpaste should be applied over the stain while making the stain wet on both sides of the fabric.
Hang the saree to dry for 2-3 days . After that wash off the stain. If stain still persists ,repeat the process until it is completely gone.
For better effect, you can use a tooth paste containing bleach. Hope these tips will help you in taking care of your priceless treasure.
